“I want to create in the way nature would; in a state of pure abandon.”       –David Vincent Gonzales

Throughout my artistic journey, I have primarily created representational works. Over the years, an inner pull has grown in magnitude to produce intuitive abstractions that explore color and movement through time and space. This body of work is purely experimental and reflects my desire to probe into a different dimension of my craft.

My artistic process is a voyage toward complete liberation. Having an end result is the antithesis of creating.  I am deeply drawn to mystical occurrences, the raw beauty of nature and its elemental forces, abandoned and disparaged material things, the faded, the tampered with, the elusive markings on physical objects, the torn into, the scrapes, and the expansion of life that is eternally recreating itself. These fascinations serve as the springboard from which all my works emerge. I have no direct goal other than to devote myself to a limitless process without expectation.

Spirituality

Throughout my life, I have always been drawn to metaphysics and supernatural phenomena. When I was a child, I floated out of my body. This incident has always fascinated me. Stories from my elders about spirits, Native American lore, UFOs, and things of that nature left me in a world full of intrigue.  In my early twenties, I read Paramahansa Yogananda’s “The Autobiography of a Yogi,” which I deeply resonated with. My encounter with Yogananda’s writings laid the tracks for my future explorations into the divine and yogic lore.

In an early chapter of my life, I practiced and taught Reiki (a form of energy healing modality), did psychic readings, and painted/drew soul portraits for people. This opened the door to tapping into the existing yet unseen energy and information that is all around us. Later, I took a course in Transcendental Meditation and several years later learned a Kriya taught by Ravi Shankar, and Inner Engineering by Sadhguru from the Isha Foundation.

In 2018, I entered a state of bliss where time slowed down, and it felt as though every cell of my being was exploding in bubbles of ecstasy. There was no difference between me and someone else, and everything around me. It felt like a sea of eternal love that I cannot articulate in words. I stumbled into this state twice without intending to. The odd thing was that I was not meditating when these events took place. Lots of questions pounded my mind as to how this happened and why this intense elation slowly dissipated after several days. Though I have had countless spiritual experiences, being in this state of euphoria was the only time I felt real and infinite. I understood that everything else was an illusion. These events drastically changed the trajectory of how I see and experience life.

Evidently, certain markings and shapes I see in my artwork reveal themselves in the real world within hours, days, sometimes weeks or months later. Coincidentally, this happens in my dreams, too. How is it that I can dream something that in the weeks or months ahead I see and encounter in real time? Sometimes it feels as though I am in a timeless void when I am active in the studio. When I reflect on some of these pieces, it feels as though I am tapping into certain timelines that play out in the future. This is not something I am trying to do; it just happens sometimes. I show up as a willing servant to the activity of painting. These pieces have a life of their own and I am only here to reveal them and share them with the world.
